Descrizione

From the parking lot of the SS 33 (exit Crevoladossola- Montecrestese) Tana), follow the wide path on the embankment of Lake Tana until you reach a wooden bridge that you ignore to continue straight until you reach the elevated highway. Turn right and then take the flat asphalt road to Roledo on the left. Shortly after, at the Agriturismo AZ in Piaggino, take the asphalt road on the right that climbs steeply up to the first hairpin bend. Here begins the beautiful mule track of the Valle dei Cani that regularly climbs up to Lomese. After crossing the village which has very beautiful examples of traditional stone architecture, follow the road to Chezzo.

At the beginning of the village begins a dirt track that you follow for a short stretch and then continue on the right along the well-preserved mule track that crosses the track again at a chapel. From here the mule track, very well preserved and made with slabs of cyclopean stone, continues to the middle coast to reach Pontemaglio where, at the oratory, meets the Via del Gries - Via Sbrinz that comes from Crevoladossola.

Interest points

Parish Church of Montecrestese, megalithic complexes of Castelluccio and Croppola, mule track of the valley of the Dogs, traditional architecture in stone, handicrafts of the peasant culture (presses, wash ovens, wells for water). The bell tower of Montecrestese, the highest in the province of Verbano Cusio Ossola, has a unique prerogative. What we see rising pointed towards the sky is the outer shell added to the Romanesque bell tower in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The Romanesque bell tower has not been destroyed but is preserved inside up to the height of the ancient belfry. The stone staircase that leads to the top of the new bell tower develops between the internal walls of this and the external ones of the Romanesque bell tower to which it leans.
