Descrizione

Along Via dei Santi, in the direction of Cortandone, we can take  variant 2B that, for 2 km, leads us to the central square of Monale. The town, whose first historical information dates back to 1160 but the origins are certainly older, is at the center of the fights between the Guelphs and Ghibellines. The local family, in fact, allies itself with the Ghibelline part that, after a first moment in which it seems to be the victorious part, is defeated by the return in forces of the Guelphs, gathered around the Asti family of the Guelphs. In fact, the Guelph part is responsible for the construction of the Bastita in which a garrison is placed in order to control the territory. Subsequently, Monale became interested in the famous family of the Scarampi of Asti, who gradually acquired the entire territory and worked hard to rebuild the castle now called Castello Scarampi. During the following centuries Monale followed the events of the nearby Asti, passing from the dominion of the Visconti and Orleans to that of the Savoys and then integrating into the subsequent Kingdom of Italy.
