From the promontory where the refuge is located, start downhill along an easy path that follows the Ambin stream, arriving at the Maroqua car park (2000 m). Continue on a dirt road to Plan de la Vie (1864 m) where there is a mountain pasture. Cross a small bridge and go up the path called "Chemin des Chevres". With an ascent of 400 m, you reach the valley of Vallene delle Savine. From here turning left you reach the pass Colle Piccolo Moncenisio and Rifugio du Petit Mont Cenis, while on the right the path winds easily along the Savine valley, passing close to Lake Savine (2447 m) until it reaches the Col Clapier pass. In the autumn 2014, a new mountain shelter marked with directional arrows was inaugurated around 10 minutes’ walk from the pass. From the pass follow path 806 to reach rio Clapier stream. Then there is a junction (waymarked) from which two paths leading to Rifugio Vaccarone start: the first starts on the left passing by the Gias mountain shelter (2626 m), in ruins, and from here goes up to the refuge, while the second runs along the stream, before climbing up a rocky ridge, with a view of the Clapier lakes. This itinerary has some fixed ropes in the upper part. Once you reach the top of the ridge, a short flat stretch leads to the refuge. In the immediate vicinity of the refuge, a mountain shelter can be used all year round.
